3rd grade "Michigan Mittens"
3rd grade students were introduced to ceramics in art this year. We read the story "M is for Michigan" reviewing the Michigan Studies information learned in social studies. Students designed their own "mitten", (the shape of our state) on paper including at least one official state symbol and one personal symbol. They created their mittens using a slab techniques with clay, and applied brightly colored glazes once their projects were bisque fired. In the classroom, students studied the State of Michigan symbols. After learning about the State Symbols in Michigan Studies, students wrote about the symbols and created posters. On the posters the students drew pictures of State Symbols and wrote facts about the symbols.
