4th Grade "Walk in Their Shoes" Portraits
4th grade art students from Ms. Brown's class had the special opportunity to work with Teaching Artist Joni Starr from the KCPIE / MSU Wharton Center. Ms. Starr visited our school three times to work with the students. We integrated theatre, visual art , and our "2nd Steps" Empathy education program. Students participated in some theatre strategies to learn about themselves and their partner for the project. Students interviewed their partners and gathered information about them and different experiences in their lives. Students designed "portraits" of their partner based on this information, and a "self portrait" too. But these portraits were not in the traditional sense...they were SHOES! They came up with creative ways to represent their partners and themselves as a pair of shoes.
