Mrs. Martell's writing classes used the format and materials provided by the Mayhem Poets in order to write slam poetry. To learn more about the Mayhem Poets, read under the residency experiences tab. Working together, they co-wrote the poems and included different forms of rhyme, cliches, acronyms, pop-culture references, and similes. Again, modeling ourselves after the performers, we added gestures, and had both individual speakers, and choral speakers.
Slam Poetry
5th Grade
What’d you write?
What’d you read?
What’d you need?
5th grade is the place to be!
We’ve got our hands on plastic pencils, using our utensils while we do our work
No time to twerk like Miley
But we are feelin smiley writing our poems and feelin at home
What’d you write?
What’d you read?
What’d you need?
5th grade is the place to be!
FYI for your information we flow your ideas
using our heads everywhere in our crazy cool classes
looking through glasses to see our math multiplication of fractions..
A part of something…. super fantastic!
TTYL means teachers teach you literature,
realistic fiction
or learning about friction,
speaking with good diction while we make a prediction.
We are as smart as geeks and we’re never freaks
What’d you write?
What’d you read?
What’d you need?
5th grade is the place to be!
Gym is exhausting playing hockey like a Boss.
We’ve never lost.
But if we did we’d be a good sport, running on the court and saying good game.
Cause we’re not lame. There’s no shame in losing when you do your best.
What’d you write?
What’d you read?
What’d you need?
5th grade is the place to be!
5th grade is like spilled milk but we don’t cry over it
which is like gratitude for our grade
which is like almost in middle school
we’re ready and not afraid so let’s have a parade and celebrate our happiness!

What up recess?! I’m obsessed with your drama addiction! I’ll make a prediction about the slick slide. It’s a good ride until people collide and then they cry because their ankle hurts, and blood starts to spurt! What up recess?! I’m obsessed with your drama addiction! Skittles taste the rainbow upside down on the swings People running under sounding like threatening thunder Swinging I have wings listening to Luke Bryan sing I’m like the king of the school What up recess?! I’m obsessed with your drama addiction! BFF means basketball funky fever running up the court but I’m too short to dunk so I just lay up and say ‘sup cause that’s what’s up What up recess?! I’m obsessed with your drama addiction! Because I’m free I run just for the fun feeling the wind in my hair and face I’m not outta place while I chase my dreams What up recess?! I’m obsessed with your drama addiction! Recess is like a chef who doesn’t know how to bake which is like a money making movie star which is like a test that does it’s own work which is a place to dream about a rainbow stream What up recess?! I’m obsessed with your drama addiction! I swing like a funky monkey climbing up the tree trunkies grabbing a banana and practicing this stanza so I can rock out the slam dunk poems like Sherlock Holmes who solves the mystery. This poem is history. Word! mayhem poets5th grade arts integration classes (Mrs. Martell,'s Mrs. Meisterheim's, Mrs. Clarke's, Mrs. Darrow's) and Mrs. McRae's , Ms. Brown's 4th grade class traveled to the Wharton Center in October to see a performance by the Mayhem Poets. The young men who make up the group combine poetry, dance and hip-hop themes to encourage students to be brave, creative and use performance poetry as a means of expression.
"The Mayhem Poets are on a mission to change your perception of what poetry is all about. These theatre-trained, comedically gifted, lyrical virtuosos seamlessly blend raw elements of hip-hop, theatre, improvisation and stand-up comedy to tell powerful truths that leave audiences wanting more. Performance poetry is an accessible, appealing art form that can motivate students to foster an appreciation for both classic and contemporary poetic/theatrical expression. The Mayhem Poets' unique approach to spoken word has landed them feature spots on the TODAY Show and Eyewitness News after winning first place ans a grant for $100k in the Microsoft Idea wins Challenge in 2006. Since then, they've been touring internationally and spreading their mission to reshape society's view of poetry." - from Wharton Center 2015-16 arts in Education brochure. *More info and photos of Mayhem poets performance at the "Residency Experiences" tab!
