5th Grade students created "It's Personal" portfolios in both English Language Arts, technology class and in art class. Students created extensive portfolios of their 5th grade year including self portraits, collages, self-reflection mirror frames in art; personal narratives, "Where I'm From" poems in ELA; Voice Thread voiceovers integrating their art and writing in computer class.
Self Portraits / "Where I'm From" Collages
Students wrote "Where I'm From" poems in ELA class based on the teachings of Glenis Redmond. Students used their poetry as inspiration in creating "Where I'm From" collages. Their collages include a self portrait drawn in art class, personal photographs of themselves, their homes, families, pets, etc. They also incorporated items such as articles and photos form the local newspaper, magazine images, and various colored and patterned papers to create their collages.
"Self-Reflection " Mirror Frames
In art class, during the ceramics unit, students created "Self-Reflection" mirror frames inkeeping with the "It's Personal" theme. Using a slab technique, students created a frame for an 4" mirror. They incorporated symbols to represent themselves as 5th grade students such as friends' names, pets, sports numbers, teachers, classmates, favorite hobbies and other personally significant symbols. We used a decorative process called "sgraffito" to finish the frames. Terracotta slip is applied and designs are scraped off. Students added small amounts of colored glazes for accents and applied clear glaze over the entire surface. After the frames were glaze fired, mirrors were added. Special thanks the Davis Glass of Lansing for the donation of 150 4" mirrors for our project!
Word Art
Students used their personal narratives, opininion essays or figurative writing pieces as inspiration for creating "Hidden Word Art". Students chose 4 important words from their essays that summarized the theme of the essay. They sketched ideas using these words and chose one to use in creating their word art, with the word creatively hidden within the art. Mrs. Martell's class used their figurative writing for this project.
It's Personal Portfolios
All of the work the students created in art, ELA, and computer class are compiled in their personal portfolios. Students also created the 'look' of their portfolio designing cover art and accenting the panels of each item included.
Technology
In Technology students created several projects to go into their portfolios. Students created a Wordle using their personal narrative or essay, they created their name with a graffiti generator, and they created a Word Foto describing themselves. Lastly, students created "Where I'm From" poems which we then turned into a VoiceThread by class.
Word Foto
Students created a list of 10 words that described their personalities in class. They then worked with partners on a few iPads. They took a pictures of themselves and in the Word Foto app students generated a word art picture of themselves.
Graffiti Names
Students used a Graffiti Creator to design their names. Students selected the font, colors, and backgrounds for their graffiti names. These were printed in color to add to their portfolio in Art.
