Dash Around the USA
Mr. Brooks and Mrs. Jewett's classes at Greyhound Intermediate School took part in a coding robots pilot program. This unit was made possible by a grant that Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Smith received from the Eaton Rapids Education Foundation. First the students spent a half a day each learning about the robot Dash and the coding program. Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Smith developed a 6 coding station activity that the students completed with the robots.
Next, students spent time in their language arts class researching robotics and how it is used in the real world and wrote a paper on this topic. Both class took a field trip to Nu-Step on February 17th to see how robotics and 3D printing are used in manufacturing. Students went on a tour of the plant, participated on the assembly line, and learned about “lean” (eliminating the waste in manufacturing.) Following the field trip students produced a creative writing piece about their robot Dash traveling around the United States. Each robot had to make 3 stops along their travels. Students spent time in math class measuring out the distances between each stop and writing the code to get the robots to move across the maps. Students learned how to program the robot to move, turn, speak, make noises and change colors. The culminating project had each group present their story with the robot Dash moving to all the points on the map while they read aloud their stories. |
