Myths, Masks & Movies
4th Grade students have been working in their classrooms on creating modern day myths. Students independently wrote their own modern day myth where they created a superhero who has characteristics of myths from the past. Students then joined groups of 4 to create a group story in which all of their modern day myth characters make an appearance. Below are a few images of the students working on the writing process in Mrs. Babbitt's, Mrs. Bahmer's, and Ms. Brown's classrooms.
Mask Making
GIS 4th grade art students, as part of the Arts Integration Focus Schools, created paper mache masks representing their Super Hero or Mythical character. The students created the characters in ELA in their regular classroom as part of a unit of study on Myths and Legends. The students brought their
character description folders to art class and created a mask design (2D). They then learned to recreate their design in 3 dimensional form as a mask. Students were very creative in designing and constructing their Super Hero characters. They also created storyboards for the movie trailers they recorded in communications class. They worked in groups of four and used storyboard templates to create the scenes and text for their trailers.

Making iMovies
In Technology students worked on brain storming their characters for their stories at the start of the unit. Students worked on finishing their storyboards from Art. They added more information about each scene onto their skit, and planned out their filming locations. Students then spent 3 days filming with their groups and one high school student from the Digital Media class. Once filming was done students watched their final trailers and took an exit survey about the entire filming process.

Music
After listening to and analyzing the music of popular superhero movies, students used their character maps to create original theme music based on their character group. Using our prior knowledge of how melodies are created, how to perform on musical instruments, and how music creates a mood or feeling, students composed short themes based on the personality traits they used to describe their characters.
