3rd Grade: Desert scenes
3rd grade classes created Dessert Scene Collages based on the book
"Around One Cactus, Owl, Bats, and Leaping Rats", by Anthony D. Fredericks. Students read the book in ELA as part of their Reading Street curriculum. In art class, Mrs. Shoup reviewed the animals in the book that live in the dessert habitat. Students had facts about the different creatures (Kit Fox, Lesser Long-Nosed Bat, Scorpion,Gila Monster, Elf Owl, Kangaroo Rat, and Rattlesnake ). We learned about 'silhouettes' and building up layers to create a collage. Students first created a "sunset" of various colors of art tissue paper to make the background layer. Students then selected at least 3 animals from the story, the Saguaro Cactus, terrain and cut out silhouettes from black paper for the second layer. Finally, they added details in black ink.
