Artistic Brainstorming (4th Grade)
4th grade art students were introduced to the concept of arts integration with a project we teachers learned at the Arts Integration Summer Institute at Wharton Center. Students created “visual brainstorming” by designing personal portrayals of the integration of arts and other content areas at school, as well as their own interests and themes. It is a creative “self portrait” in the context of arts integration.
4th Grade Ceramics
4th grade art classes created “My Michigan” plaques using a slab making technique. They selected at least two official state symbols and at least one personal symbol to incorporate into their design, representing the state as well as their personal experiences as a citizen of Michigan. 4th grade classes travel to Lansing to visit the State Capitol, and the Michigan Historical Museum in May. This visual art project
serves as an integration of art and social studies, and helps review what students have learned before their trip. It also introduces students to various hand-building techniques with clay and application of glazes.

5th Grade Ceramics
5th grade art classes integrated social studies and visual art by creating slabs and hand built vessels in visual art class. They employed Native American motifs from the various Native American tribal regions studied in social studies. Students used white clay with terracotta slip to create a ‘sgraffito’ effect and scribed motifs from the Eastern Woodlands, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Great Plains regions.
