3rd Grade: shibori kimonos
KI 3rd grade art students created 'kimono' art based on the story "Suki's Kimono", by Chieri Uegaki, from their Reading Street curriculum in ELA. They listened to the story in art class with Mrs. Shoup, and then learned about how traditional kimonos are dyed and constructed. Students viewed photos of Japanese Shibori (tie) dyeing methods.
They sketched ideas and chose colors for their own "kimono". We dyed large sheets of rice paper by folding and dipping it into liquid watercolor. Students could create a geometric / floral design or stripes depending on the folding method. While the dyed paper was drying , some students sprinkled salt on the wet paper and this helped to produce the intricate "Shibori-like" designs.
When the papers were dry we folded them (origami) into beautiful kimonos. Some students wrote imaginative stories about how they got their kimonos.
