5th Grade Resident Artist:
Sarah Hendrickson Social Studies: During the Explorer's unit the students researched two explorer's (where they were from, what they planned to do, and what they actually did) to teach to the rest of the class. In order to help the students with their presentation skills, Mrs. Hendrickson came in three times to teach the students theater skills to help them develop their character (the explorers). She taught them physical characterization and developing an emotional connection. The students then used these skills to "become" the explorers they had researched. Science
As we studied and used the engineering process Sarah worked with the kids to get their creative ideas moving. She used activities such as Town Hall and 5 Things to get the kids to spontaneously react to prompts. By the third day their creative energy was flowing and performed an impromptu add to sell a new 21st century invention, including a little jingle to go along with it. |

Meaningful MovementsIn Social Studies, the students used meaningful movements all year--from knowing where all the continents and oceans were located to how the Native Americans adapted to their environment to the geography in the English Colonies. The students used them to help remember key facts and ideas.
