Mrs. Wylegala and Kandinsky Style Art
Wharton Center Artist-in-Residence Liz Wylegala came to visit two 4th grade classes (Mrs. McRae and Ms. Brown) and one 3rd grade class (Ms. Kane) to connect math concepts from geometry with the artistic style of Kandinsky. Mrs. Wylegala first spoke to the classes about Kandinsky's style and showed examples of artwork produced using math. She then passed out markers and had students work in partners, each adding a colorful element of geometric line or shape to their paper. Once each paper was filled, individual students filled in the planes created by the intersecting lines and shapes, adding pattern and extra color. The students finished off their art pieces with stark lines of black permanent marker. Mrs. Wylegala helped students make connections across the curriculum through her engaging art and math lesson.
