Persuasive Writing & Performance Poetry
5th grade students from Mrs. Martell’s/ Mrs. Boles’, Mrs. Darrow’s and Mrs. Meisterheim’s classes wrote Opinion Essays, a persuasive writing assignment as part of their English Language Arts curriculum. Students chose their own topics, creating personal relevance and expression. Students then used their essays as inspiration for visual artwork in art class. Students selected a word or words from their essays to represent the overall theme and created a mixed media hidden-word painting. At first look the artwork appears to be a visual composition only. A second look reveals the word or words “hidden” within the composition to illustrate the essay theme. Students also used select, significant words from their essays to create “Wordle” self-portraits in communications (computers) class.
Finally, students had the opportunity to participate in a workshop offered by Performance Poet, Glenis Redmond, who visited GIS and demonstrated the art of performance poetry. Students created and performed personal poetry based on their original essays. This project integrates writing, visual art, technology, and performing arts.

Word Art
5th grade students used their persuasive writing opinion essays from ELA class to create hidden word art. They reviewed their essays and circled significant words that represent the theme of their essays. Students sketched at least 4 ideas using the different words selected. The word or words were ‘hidden’ within the artwork as part of the art. The picture illustrates the overall theme of the essay. Students created their final artwork in media of their choice including watercolor, oil pastel, colored pencil and crayon.
Wordle
Students in communications copied their opinion essays and pasted them into www.Wordle.net. Students then selected a color scheme, design, and font for their essay Wordle. The words that appeared the most in the essays are the largest in the word collage.
