4th Grade: U.S. Regions
Mrs. McRae and Ms. Brown's 4th grade classes learned about each of the regions of the United States through 5 units: Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and West. The students learned all of the states, capitals and abbreviations, as well as resources and industries, geographic features, and culture of each region. They then chose a state to research using books and internet search engines. Throughout the rest of the school year, the students applied their knowledge of US regions through art-integrated activities in each of their specials classes. In art, students created ceramic state plaques based on their state research reports to build a collaborative USA map. The states will fit together to demonstrate regions of the U.S. Finally, students created a Google Slides presentation on their individual states in Technology. Mr. Hicks', Mrs. Babbitt's, and Mrs. Balmer's classes created individual full U.S. Regions maps in ceramics. They included all five regions studied and selected at least two symbols for each region.
The U.S. Regions Map is a "Work in Progress" with some students still glazing their states.
