3rd Grade "Shibori Kimonos"
Once again, 3rd grade art students created beautiful kimonos based on the story "Suki's Kimono". Students read the story in English Language Arts class as part of their Reading
Street curriculum. In art class, students review the story and vocabulary such as geta (shoes),obi (belt),kimono (dress),obachan(grandmother), and somen(noodles). Students are introduced to the Japanese method of "tie-dying" called shibori.
First, students design their own kimono and choose the colors they want to use. Then they use sumi rice paper and liquid watercolor to create a folded paper version of shibori.
The results are stunning! The colors are vivid and each pattern unique. Students are always thrilled to see the dyed paper unfolded to reveal their beautiful designs!

Next, students learned to fold their rice paper into "kimonos" using an origami method.
Each student shared part of their rice paper to create a contrasting "obi" for their kimono
Students wrote stories about their kimonos. All were displayed together throughout the school for our Art Show.
